НОЩНИ ПЕПЕРУДИ
Six women. Six stories. The hidden reality of the sex industry.
What is really behind the “oldest profession in the world”? Нощни Пеперуди (Night
Butterflies) is built from extensive field research and verbatim interviews with women working in the so-called sex “industry” in Sofia and surrounding areas.
In a country where prostitution isn’t legalised but remains deep in the shadows, we worked to create a performance using recorded testimony and transforming them into a physical, multi-layered experience. My work as Assistant Director focused on the documentary integrity of the piece, supporting the director and choreographer and looking after logistics during our run.
This project is part of trilogy by leading documentary theatre company Vox Populi. The firstinstalment brought to life stories from Sofia’s infamous prison with the next and final show looking at the lives of modern-day monks.
In Нощни Пеперуди (Night Butterflies) I worked assisting Neda Sokolovska whose style is provocative and rooted in devised techniques. The show asks the audience to confront the failures of our systems and sheds light on the resilience of the women caught within them. By bringing these voices to one of the major contemporary arts spaces of the country, we are claiming room for stories that are too often pushed to the margins.
